We know a thing or two about leaks...
Just like a damaged wire, a leak can be caused by the same things except there can literally be hundreds of feet of pipe anywhere on your property
Trenchers, shovels and even hand shovels are a cause. Damage can happen when installing a fence or an invisible dog fence wire, or something as innocent as planting shrubs or flowers!
Root intrusion is another common problem. Most systems were installed when the homes were built and before any planting was done. Over the years, roots grow, press against pipes and pull pipe joints apart. The roots will unfortunately win this battle every single time!
Lightning strikes will cause severe damage to pipes and wiring. Usually in several places.

Locate actual source of leak
Sometimes this is easier said then done since water will follow the path of least resistance. A leak coming out of the ground in one place can originate from somewhere else - and sometimes no where close
This can be difficult since most properties have sand not far under the dirt
Once we find the source of leak, the fun starts

Damage from tools
Once we establish the source of the leak, we can deterime the cause.
If it's tool damage, it's a matter of cutting out the damaged section and repairing it
The zone is flushed and the entire system is tested to be sure no other leaks

Root intrusion
If root intrusion turns out to be causing the leak, we will need to make a decision with the customer
If the root is small enough and won't harm the intergity of the tree, we can cut the root out of the way and perform the repair
If the damage is near a tree and it's a larger root, we will re-reoute the pipe far away from the root so the problem doesn't happen again

Lightning damage
Lightning damage is always severe, usually taking out the pipes for an entire zone or more
These jobs always have one thing in common - there's a LOT of damage.
Why does lightning strike a plastic pipe? The control wiring is normally taped to the bottom of the pipes. The lightning can strike in the woods, travel through a root, into your valve box, through the wiring and into your timer while fracturing the pipe every few feet, occasionally blowing the timer right off of the wall
